Apparently I must have suspected back then that my favorite Rotring Art Pencil would become obsolete because I found four of them in my art supplies box along with a few lead pointers marked “Rotring Made in Germany”:
One Art Pencil was purchased in a set with the Art Pen; the rest were purchased individually. The metal box came with an Art Pen but it was handy to carry around two Art Pencils since I didn’t use the Art Pen very often.
Three Art Pencils are used for different leads (I usually use a 2B, an F and an H) and the fourth Art Pencil (bottom) has the silver point wire.
There was also a white sharpening stone that I believe was included with the Rotring Calligraphy set, but I used it to sharpen the silver point wire – very handy!
I haven’t used them for a while so I tried a few sketches and was still amazed at how comfortable and well-balanced it is for a lead holder.
So….why all the fuss over a lead holder? I suppose every artist has their favorite tools they prefer whether it is a particular type of paint, paper, canvas, brush, etc. Although technically any pencil will do, sometimes one gets lucky and finds a tool that is not only functional and a good “fit” for an individual drawing style, but a joy to use as well.
You’re one lucky person, no wait, spoiled is probably a better term here :p
I still hope to find one (or more) of these for myself one day. I don’t even want to know how many hours I’ve already spent looking for them on the web and in stores. It definitely looks great in terms of design and I’m sure it’ll feel just as comfortable in the hand.
Out of curiousity, do you still have the box which the original set belonged too? Was it this one by any chance: http://www.leadholder.com/assets/lh-non/rotring/rotring-art_pen_pencil-set-macd.jpg
I’m curious to know if your set had any info written on it such as perhaps a name and article code. There was another set I found on the web which was called “Sketch Set” and had the code 250091 written on it. See the following image: http://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/3015482532/sizes/l/
The info could just help me a bit to find one of these for myself one day. Thanks in advance 🙂
I do own one for over a decade and I did not realize it was such a sought after item. But you are right that it is well balanced and comfortable to use.
Sorry, no original sets or boxes any more – disappeared years ago. One pencil was in a set with the Art Pen as per the photo and the rest were purchased individually. The lead pointers were also sold separately.
If you can find one grab it – they are wonderful drawing tools!
Oh well, thanks for the swift reply, and sorry for my late one :p
If I ever will find one, I will pick it up without a doubt. I’m afraid I might never find one though seeing as they’re so incredibly hard to find.
I just purchased an Art Pencil from eBay.
I’m excited to received and try it.
I have tried Art Pens before, and I love it.
It was only recently that I learn about Art Pencils.
They’re rare though. Once in a while they show up on eBay
and sold immediately, even the used ones.
Try other eBay sites such as UK and Germany.
Do you know where to buy leads for the Art Pencil?
Any 2mm pencil lead will fit the Art Pencil and would be available at most stationary, art supply or drafting supply stores.
Hope you enjoy the Art Pencil – it’s still my favorite.
I finally received mine. I love it!
I posted some photos on my website..
It looks in great shape – almost new – congratulations and enjoy! I wish these were still available because they really are a great lead holder.

HOW CAN I BUY THIS ART PENCIL? I WANT BUY!!
LET ME KNOW THANKS ROGERIO VITOR
Unfortunately these haven’t been made for a long time. Sometimes they can be found on Ebay.
I have had my Rotring Art Pencil for years and agree that it is a magnificent art tool. Nothing else comes close. Had wondered about one day being unable to find lead refills since I have lost or never had info re: size. Many thanks to WOLFGANGCAT for information shared.
I’ve used the Rotrig pens since the mid-eighties and once also had the pencil , since gone missing, that took an unusually fat lead. My art supply store said it would order replacement lead made by KOH-I-NOOR only if I bought a gross of them, which I did. They’ve been on the shelf for years unattended until now. I find myself with ten, 12-packs of lead marked 2201-1, B. and no pencil. So after deciding to do some sketching outdoors, I was prompted to look for one first around my studio and then online and that’s how I found your site. which has proved very helpful. I hadn’t know any of the details you’ve posted about the pencil. In the meantime, I’ll continue my search.

Unfortunately, the Rotring Art Pencils haven’t been made for many years. You might try to find one on Ebay or another site that might sell vintage items.

I used to have an Art Pencil– and the matching lead pointer –yeaaaars ago. (Sadly lost in an ‘incident’ over a decade ago, along with all my other art supplies.)
Funny story; I literally bought it out of the back of a truck parked alongside the Koh-I-Noor offices in Bloomsbury, NJ in the early-to-mid ’90s. 😉
